NZWPW Chairman's Challenge tonight

Written by David Dunn

Chairman's Challenge

NZWPW Chairman Martin Stirling holds the second annual Chairman’s Challenge tonight at the Lower Hutt Town Hall, in an attempt to find out just who is the best wrestler in the country.

With matches not announced until bell time, wrestlers taking part in the 12-man challenge could end up facing any one of 11 other competitors, meaning they’ll have to be on their game and ready for anyone.

Interestingly, Martin Stirling has prevented several of the wrestlers who competed in last year’s Chairman’s Challenge from returning to the competition in 2010. An official statement issued by the chairman reads:

“Everyone is expecting to see the top wrestlers only in action, while my rookies would have to sit it out yet again, so I've decided that it's time to let the veterans sit this one out and give the rookies the chance to see if they can make the grade.”

NZWPW's CWO Rehua backs Martin Stirling's decision, but has announced that not all veteran competitors will be given the night off. All NZWPW title holders will be entered into the Chairman’s Challenge as well as the man who was voted as the best wrestler in last year's competition, Roger Ventura.

Wrestlers entered into the Chairman’s Challenge include

  • Axl
  • D-Hoya
  • Fredrick the Great
  • GI Jay
  • NZWPW Tag Team Champion JC Star
  • Kid Caprice
  • The Nerd
  • Roger Ventura
  • Rufguts
  • Thor
  • NZWPW Tag Team Champion Travis Banks
  • NZWPW Champion Tykade

With matches decided at random later tonight, who will square off with who? Could we see NZWPW Tag Team Champions JC Star and Travis Banks have to wrestle one another? Could Rufguts get a shot at the NZWPW Champion, Tykade? Might D-Hoya wrestle Roger Ventura in a New Zealand dream match?

NZWPW Chairman’s Challenge takes place tonight, October 15, at the Lower Hutt Town Hall on Laings Road, Lower Hutt.
Click here for a map. Doors open at 7pm with the first match starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are available on the door at a rate of $15 for adults at $10 for children.

We helped out at the Prairie Wrestling Association match last friday, whom Mr Storm books for. We helped put the ring up and take it down and got to watch the show. Met a few solid contacts, which is definitely an important part of the business. There is a good chance that some of the boys and girls at the academy could get a match later on in the session. Lance has been teaching us a little more each day and I definitely feel like I am better equipped to pull off anything I set my mind to. I am also attending gymnastics once a week, so may even have an aerial string to my bow when I return to the Southern Shores.
I would like to take this opportunity to shoutout to Mr Storm, my housemates Bevan, Matt, Elliot and Fanny Anderson, the boys back home in the NZWPW locker room, the other trainees at Storm Wrestling Academy, David Dunn, and all the fans back home.

So i've now completed four weeks in Lance Storm Wrestling Academy. I always thought I was a good fighter before, and coming off back-to-back wins in SCW my confidence was pretty high. So after learning some more technical defence and counters i'm even more confident in my wrestling ability.
People back home use the nickname 'The Human Forklift' to describe me, and I certainly lived up to that nickname when I bodyslammed a 300lbs man.
I'm thinking more now about the way I wrestle and am coming up with good strategy's and game plans and I can't wait to get back to New Zealand and show the fans what i've got!

So, I don't want to sound like a mark, but I have to admit, I changed my shirts three times to find one to make the best first impression, and that was just calling Lance on the phone to arrange to meet him. I was a little nervous, but Lance is a very approachable guy. Lance showed me round my residence. Lance did the "Landlord" thing and left me to it. We start on Tuesday, and after a month of no wrestling, I can't wait, so we had our first training with Mr Storm”. If you read the not so fine print on the “Storm Wrestling Academy” website, it says, "PLEASE SHOW UP IN SHAPE." After a series of "warm up exercises”, our class had its first casualty as one brave young lad took himself to the limit, and had to excuse himself so that he didn't revisit breakfast in Lance's 2-inches-shy-of-a-regulation-WWE ring. He was also our second casualty, when he realized that he actually had more to give, and we were treated to the sound of him vomiting once again.

On the 1st week we did conditioning: sprints, squats, sit ups, step ups and press ups etc. We also were learning basic holds such as arm ringers, arm bars, headlocks and various counters. The second week started out the same until he showed us how to body slam, clothesline, run the ropes, hit a turnbuckle and perform tackles and drop downs.
In conclusion, so far I have learned a lot of usable moves and various nifty counters.

The C.W.O. (Rehua) has been in discussions with the SCW Commissioner (Big Al) and the "Southern Championship Wrestling Management", and can now confirm that SCWs very own Italian Stallion "Sammy V" has been accepted to attend the "Lance Storm Training Academy" in Canada and will be joining WPWs own "Shining Nick Silver" for the opportunity of a life time to train with the former WWE great!
Because of this great news NZWPW will have a fortnightly diary (commencing in September) on our website with updates and news of their time spent in Canada.

Shining Nick Silver is a veteran of New Zealand wrestling and was the first co-holder of the NZWPW Tag team titles with Silencer Jon Miracle back in 2007. He is a stunt man, is keen advocate for New Zealand Wrestling and has a desire to get NZ wrestling out to the mainstream audience.

Sammy V is only new to the wrestling scene, but has always had a love of it. He trained in rugby and boxing and came across SCW earlier in the year. Even though he has only had two matches, his time spent in Canada will no doubt give him the edge he wants to improve greatly in the sport and hopes to one day to make a living from it. His first goal he has upon his return is to win the SCW title.

C.W.O Statement:

"I know that many fans were caught off guard by the events that transpired at Saturday night's Rival Turf show in Auckland, all I can say is that Team WPW were only acting on Mine and Dion's orders, and if any of the IPW roster and/or fans are still upset about the outcome; then just remember this...

It Was Only Business!"

One of the biggest wrestling shows in New Zealand history kicked off earlier tonight in full force, producing a ton of memorable moments.

In an epic battle, "Te Tahi" Vinny Dunn defeated Reuben de Jong to become the new IPW Heavyweight champion!

Team NZWPW defeated Team IPW in the double ring spectacular match, with the Five Star Revolution JC Star and Travis Banks surviving in Team NZWPW, defeating IPW's A-Class for the win. As Team NZWPW beat down A-Class after the match, the IPW locker room started to pour out to help, only to be stopped in their tracks by Team NZWPW.

The new IPW Heavyweight champion "Te Tahi" Vinny Dunn hit the ring, only to be caught up in the brawl, taking a beating from Team NZWPW. As things looked dim for Dunn, "The Deal" Dal Knox made his triumphant return to IPW armed with a steel chair! Team NZWPW fled the ring as Knox hit the ring but then shocked the huge crowd by nailing Dunn with the chair!

As the crowd booed the returning Knox, IPW Commissioner Dion McCracken announced a title match was about to take place between "The Deal" Dal Knox and the new IPW Heavyweight champion, Vinny Dunn. The bell rang as Knox assaulted Vinny Dunn viciously with the steel chair, culminating with a three count to become the new IPW Heavyweight Champion. To a chorus of boos and chants, "The Deal" Dal Knox exited the ring with Team NZWPW as the show came to a close!

Ben Mana in PWAQ Australia

Former NZWPW tag team champion Ben Mana will be travelling to the Gold Coast in Australia next week with NZWPW Chairman Martin Stirling to train with some of Australia's top Sumo wrestlers in preparation for the "World Combat Games" in Beijing, China next month, but as a special surprise Martin Stirling has arranged for Ben Mana to meet one of the worlds greatest Sumo wrestlers ever: " AKEBONO". Akebono (Originally born in Hawaii) has made a name for himself all over the world for Sumo wrestling, but his skills have even helped him to step into the WWE wrestling ring against the Big Show in a Sumo style match at "Wrestlemania 21".  But the surprises do not stop there for Ben; due to Ben Mana's big win over former NZWPW Heavyweight Champion (Adam Avalanche) at Powerplay last month; the C.W.O of New Zealand Wide Pro Wrestling (Rehua) has also decided to reward Ben Mana with his first Australian match of his career at PWAQ next week on July 17th in the Gold Coast.  This could be a sign of great things to come for the Maori warrior.

Ben Mana will have his hands full at PWA Queensland this weekend, as the C.W.O. (Rehua) has not only placed him in a "Fatal Four Way Match" against Mark Davis, Esteban Molina and the current PWAQ Champion D Star, but the Fatal Four Way will also be for the PWA Queensland Championship. Will Mana fall to the more experienced wrestlers or will he be the first wrestler in NZWPW to hold the PWAQ Heavyweight Title, quite possibly being the biggest match of title?
