Ben Mana & Tykade retained their NZWPW Tag Team Championship in dominant fashion against "Shining" Nick Silver & Rufguts at NZWPW Bringing Down the House this past Friday. The champs retained the belts in a submission match - requested by SNS & Rufguts.
Thinking they might have the edge based on Mana & Tykade's traditional arsenal of clotheslines and shoulderblocks, Rufguts & Silver modified the title match moments before the bell rang. They soon lived to regret their decision though as Mana & Tykade forced SNS & Rufguts to make quick tags so as to avoid being caught in a submission.
Eventually the challengers started to pick off Tykade, weakening his leg with chop blocks and similar moves. It wasn't enough to leave with the titles though and Tykade tagged in Ben Mana! Mana cleaned house against SNS & Rufguts, even powering out of "Shining" Nick's finisher - the Silver Bullet. SNS changed his game-plan and hit Mana with a screwdriver neckbreaker (the finishing move of Nick's original tag team partner, "Silencer" Jean Miracle) to come close to locking in an armbar.
Tykade was tagged back into the contest though and he and Mana powered their opponents to the ground and locked in submissions just as NZWPW Chairman Martin Stirling ordered the match end in one minute. SNS & Rufguts tapped in quick succession to ensure Mana & Tykade remained the NZWPW Tag Team Champions. After the match Ben Mana showed a savage side of him when he would not release the mana lock (single leg knee lock) on "Shining" Nick Silver who had previously suffered an injury to the same knee in a match with Travis Banks a month earlier. Nothing has been confirmed but it may look as if "Shining" Nick Silver will be out on injury.
NZWPW Bringing Down the House Results:
Zodiak def. Tom Briggs - Zodiak scored a win against the debuting Tom Briggs with a backslide, proving that sometimes the simplest moves are the best. Briggs showed signs of promise in the match, but in the end it was Zodiak’s experience edge that gave him the win.
Axl def. Kamystery - Axl used his size advantage to overpower Kamystery for most of the match. Kamystery rallied the crowd behind him and was able to take Axl off his feet, but it wasn’t for long and “The Omen” finished Kamystery off with his Atomic Spinebuster.
2-out-of-3 Falls Match: Matariki def. Rose - Matariki’s experience gave her the edge in a 2-out-of-3 falls match with the debuting Rose. Matariki took the first fall with a clothesline after keeping Rose in a headlock for several minutes. Rose fought back to claim the second fall with a small package from an attempted crab though, meaning a third fall was needed. Matariki wasn’t playing around as she made short work of Rose with a bulldog to take the win. As a sign of respect, Matariki helped Rose to her feet after the match.
"Dream Catcher" Phil Woodgate w/ O'Siris def. Travis Banks - Woodgate picked up a tainted win against fan-favourite Travis Banks with the help of O’Siris. Banks looked like he was on his way to victory with a German suplex and eventually the crossface, but O’Siris threw a mysterious powder into Banks’ eyes with the referee distracted, allowing “Dream Catcher” to nail the Razorblade Romance on Travis.
JC Star def. The Nerd - JC Star outsmarted The Nerd with some unorthodox tactics. Nerd found himself dazed after a t-bone suplex from Star, but remained on the mat so as to avoid JC’s Starstruck Superkick. The Nerd hurried to his feet to spin Star around with the ROFLcopter but became disorientated himself. Star recovered and tricked Nerd into ROFLcoptering the referee! Star faked a count and The Nerd thought he had pinned his opponent as he covered the ref. As JC raised Nerd’s hand in victory he nailed him with the Starstruck Superkick to take the real win in their match.
Adam Avalanche def. CD - Adam Avalanche shocked the He Toa Gym when he defeated CD with an elaborate pinning combination, of all moves. CD managed to lift Adam off his feet at one stage, but it was when the stocky NZWPW veteran tried to Spear Avalanche in the corner that Adam rolled over his back and took the win with a modified roll up!
NZWPW Tag Team Championship: Submission Match: Ben Mana & Tykade (c) def. "Shining" Nick Silver & Rufguts - In the main event of the evening Ben Mana & Tykade retained their tag team titles in a submission match! NZWPW Chairman Martin Stirling announced that there was only one minute left in the match just as Mana and Tykade locked in stereo submissions to SNS and Rufguts, forcing them to tap out.
