Star retires Woodgate

"Dream Catcher" passes out his ring-gear to fans“Dream Catcher” Phil Woodgate wrestled his last match in NZWPW at Live Professional Wrestling last night, falling victim to a moonsault from JC Star to bring his five-plus year career to an end.

As Woodgate made his way to the ring it was announced that he would wrestle JC Star with no disqualifications, a last minute addition to their career vs. career bout.

“Dream Catcher” extended his hand to Star as the bell rang, only to slap Star in the across the face as he went to accept the handshake. Phil tried to put JC in a side-headlock but was shot into the ropes and given a slap of his own from Star. Woodgate answered back with a blatant low-blow though - legal with no disqualifications - before raking Star’s eyes across the top rope.

Star tried to cover up in the corner and managed to avoid a running splash from “Dream Catcher.” Star then kicked Woodgate in the back of the head and began setting him up on the top rope. With Woodgate perched precariously on the top turnbuckle, JC Star leapt onto his shoulders and tried to flip him across the ring with a hurricanrana. “Dream Catcher” held on to the top rope though and left Star to slam into the mat on his own.

It didn’t take long for JC Star to recover and smash Woodgate’s head into the mat with push-up facebusters, one of Phil’s trademark moves. Star then reverted back to his own move set with a Starstruck Superkick!

Thankfully for “Dream Catcher,” he was able to roll out of the ring before JC Star could attempt a pin, and blinded Star with some Dream Dust as the NZWPW Tag Team Champion tried to give chase. Both men exchanged closed-fists as they staggered through the crowd before finding their way back to the ring where “Dream Catcher” nailed Star with the Razorblade Romance!

Star kicked out at a count of two to save his career and “Dream Catcher” began to argue with referee Damian Tait. Woodgate then tried to hit JC with a Starstruck Superkick, but Star caught the shot and positioned Woodgate for a Razorblade Romance. Having performed the move for so many years, Woodgate knew how to shrug Star off, but wasn’t prepared for a series of rolling kicks from Star who then followed up with a T-bone suplex.

With “Dream Catcher” prone on the mat, Star took to the top rope for a moonsault but crashed and burned when Woodgate rolled out of the way at the last second! Both men pulled themselves back to their feet and JC caught Phil with a Starstruck Superkick from nowhere, before going back to the top rope. This time “Dream Catcher” was unable to roll to safety and Star connected with his moonsault.

A three count followed, and Star was declared the winner of the match, bringing “Dream Catcher” Phil Woodgate’s NZWPW career to an end. The NZWPW roster emptied onto the stage to applaud Woodgate as he made his way to the back for the last time, having wrestled his last match.

Rufguts’ apology to the Upper Hutt crowd was anything but sincere, which brought out a masked man known only as The Upper Hutt Guy to uphold the city’s honour. Eager to make an example out of the man, Rufguts challenged him to an NZWPW Championship match before snap suplexing the wrestler and tearing his mask off.

Rufguts traps Banks in a surfboard submissionThe joke was on Rufguts though when he exposed Travis Banks, who quickly tore off the rest of The Upper Hutt Guy’s attire and wrestled the NZWPW Champion to the mat. Rufguts managed to escape Banks’ clutches and rattle him with a European uppercut across the back before trying to tie the NZWPW Tag Team Champion up in a surfboard.

Banks struggled out of the submission attempt and hit the ropes to take Rufguts off his feet with a dropkick. Both men got back to their feet and opted for a test of strength, when Rufguts eventually won, forcing Banks down to the mat and nailing him with a legdrop to the back of the head.

Rufguts went back to his surfboard attempt, this time locking it in and rolling back to put Banks in a pinning predicament after inflicting as much pain as possible. Travis refused to play defence though, and drove Rufguts into the mat with a German suplex that sent the NZWPW Champion hurrying out of the ring to regroup.

Travis Banks climbed out of the ring to prevent Rufguts from being counted out before the Human Weapon dazed Banks, re-entered the ring, and came hurtling through the middle and top ropes with a suicide dive! Rufguts then returned to the ring and waited for Banks to make it back in at a count of nine.

Rufguts stretched Banks out in a Gory special, but Travis refused to tap out. In fact, as Rufguts looked to apply even more pressure in the hold, Banks rolled through into a sunset flip pin and nearly had the NZWPW Champion beaten.

After a series of pins Rufguts evacuated the ring yet again. This time Travis Banks had his scouted out though, and took to the top rope for an insane cross-body press out of the ring and onto his unknowing opponent. Banks then heaved Rufguts into the steel ring post before re-entering the ring and waiting for the champ to pull himself back onto the apron.

Banks hit the ropes and charged into Rufguts with a knee that sent him spilling to the floor once more before eventually allowing him to get back into the ring. Banks remained on offence and cut Rufguts off as he tried to climb to the second turnbuckle, driving him into the mat with a powerbomb.

Rufguts scrambled to get back to his feet but found himself caught up in the ropes instead. Before he could get off the middle rope, Travis Banks dove from the top rope to deliver a rib-crushing double-stomp!

When both men managed to get back to their feet following the high-risk, high-impact shot, Rufguts jabbed Banks in the eyes and hit him with a Rufdriver. Banks was able to kick out though and back Rufguts into the corner before positioning him on the top rope and delivering a superplex for a near fall!

Banks trapped Rufguts in the ropes and lit him up with some hard knife-edge chops before moving him to the corner and trying once again for a superplex. Things turned bad for Travis in a hurry though when Rufguts jabbed him in the stomach and picked him up for a devastating middle-rope Rufdriver! A cover followed and Banks wasn’t kicking out, allowing Rufguts to retain the NZWPW Championship.
